Particles of Talc Found in Cancerous Lung Tissue

There are only a few sources of asbestos remaining that can cause mesothelioma and talc may be one of them

Monday, October 21, 2019 - Asbestos came to the public's attention front and center in the early 1970s. Since then lawyers have profusely advertised for clients to join class-action lawsuits against manufacturers of building supplies and insulation materials. The focus of the plaintiff's complaints was that inhaling asbestos particles in the air over a long period caused mesothelioma, a rare and asbestos-specific form of cutting and scarring of the smallest essential lung tissues called alveoli. Responsible governments immediately began cleaning up buildings that contained asbestos and companies recalled their building material products containing asbestos. Asbestos-related mesothelioma was thought to be a thing of the past until asbestos was found in the talc in Johnson's Baby Powder. Ninety-nine percent of the people that developed mesothelioma in the 1970s and 1980s worked as asbestos miners or in the construction industry or government buildings for long periods. Other times, mesothelioma was thought to occur spontaneously. As the government came down hard on companies that produced asbestos and products that contained asbestos, one source escaped the scope of their awareness. Today, talc, a naturally occurring mineral, has been alleged to contain carcinogenic levels of asbestos and millions of people have used and breathed the product daily, sometimes many times per day, for decades. In response to allegations, biopsies have been performed on the lung tissue of mesothelioma patients and particles of talc have been found reaffirming the plaintiffs' accusations that inhaling Johnson's Baby Powder consistently throughout their entire life caused their cancer.

Time magazine has published the findings of a 33-person study called "Mesothelioma Associated with the Use of Cosmetic Talc" where researchers found particles of talc in all 33 biopsies tested confirming beliefs that particles of talc must contain asbestos, the most probable cause of their mesothelioma. Plaintiffs may call these researchers as expert witnesses to attest to their findings. Thousands of plaintiffs have accused Johnson & Johnson of knowing that their talc supply was contaminated with asbestos for decades and failed to warn consumers, choosing instead to maximize company profits.

To combat this potentially devastating scientific evidence, defense attorneys may call the credibility of the sponsors of the test into question. The defense cites one of the study's co-authors, Jacqueline Molin, of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, for her being a paid expert witness with a biased pre-disposition. Moline had said that she thought the study was important because it showed the overwhelming probability that talc contained mesothelioma-causing asbestos. Moline was also concerned that so few people with ovarian cancer and mesothelioma of the lung and stomach, even today with all that is know, have been made aware of the presence of asbestos in talc. For over 50 years the FDA has trusted the cosmetics industry in general and Johnson & Johnson specifically to be self-policing. The company's efficacy in testing its talc supply is now being called into question.
